| Office of Lt. Governor |
If there is a vacancy in the office of the Governor of Louisiana, the Lt. Governor is first in the order of succession, according to The Constitution of Louisiana. Thus, the qualifications for the second-highest office in this state must be similar to those of Governor.
The Lieutenant Governor exercises powers delegated by the Governor as provided by law. Under the state's Constitution, the Lieutenant Governor is made an ex-officio member of each committee, board and commission on which the Governor serves. Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor serves as Commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. There are five agencies under this Department: Tourism, State Parks, Cultural Development, State Museums, and the State Library. One of the main purposes of the Department is to promote Louisiana's Tourism as well as the Arts. We have a rich cultural heritage which should be promoted, not only in New Orleans, but throughout our state. The Lieutenant Governor oversees two commissions which make recommendations to our elected officials, the Louisiana Serve Commission and the Louisiana Retirement Development Commission. In addition, the Lt. Governor currently is a member of the State Bond Commission. The office of Lt. Governor should also become a platform for the development and promotion of new legislative initiatives for improving the image of our state. |
